Overview of Igreja Espírito Santo Church (Igreja do Espírito Santo Comunidade Cristã )
The seed that ended up giving rise to what we currently know as IESCC, was planted in the 60s, more precisely in 1965, when pastors Félix and Irene Cunha, recently married and arrived in Faro, under guidance from the Holy Spirit, began work of evangelization in their home, with children who lived on the street where they lived.
Soon, along with the children, the parents began to come and it was necessary to hold services, which were celebrated in the living room of the apartment where the pastors lived. The law allowed, even during the fascist regime, to place a maximum of 20 chairs in a private house, for evangelical services.
After some time, developing the work along these lines, pastors Félix and Irene agreed to join the Assembly of God Church, leading to its opening in the city of Faro, cooperating with other pastors from this Ministry.
Around 1984, Pastor Félix felt like God to restart his original vision, that is, to return to holding services in his home, to start a new work in the city. So prayer meetings began to be held in the same room where they had started years before, with 5 people.
After some time, official work began, in the facilities that today still belong to IESCC, and now function as a room for youth activities and rehearsals for themed parties in the Community. The Evangelical Pentecostal Church of the Algarve, IEPA, was inaugurated, with a group of 11 people who, week after week, developed the work. After a few years, the name of IEPA was changed to Igreja do Espírito Santo Comunidade Cristã, IESCC.
The Church grew, reaching almost a hundred people and at the beginning of the 90s, a strong movement of the Holy Spirit, began to change some habits, in terms of uses and customs and some more traditional doctrinal understandings.
In 1991, Paulo Cunha, son of pastors Feliz and Irene, was dedicated to the full-time ministry, cooperating with his parents in God’s work, in the city of Faro, with the Church acquiring a room, which today still functions as a meeting space. Celebration, the well-known Church of Penha, in Faro.
At the end of 1991, such an intense outpouring of the Holy Spirit attracted hundreds of people from the capital and surrounding areas, who experienced the power of the Gospel of Jesus, in miraculous healings, spiritual liberation, and teachings of the word of Faith.
As it was difficult to hold the main meetings in the Penha room, due to excessive attendance, meetings began in 1992 on Friday and Sunday, in a Cinema close to the S. Luis Stadium. At this time, Pastor Paulo Cunha assumed leadership of the Church, as Bishop superintendent of all work.
This period coincided with a great spiritual awakening, where crowds gathered at the Cinema on weekends, waiting in line for more than 8 hours to enter the space and get a seat. More people stood than could sit. Great miracles of healing and liberation occurred, and the Church began work in other cities.
The small radio program that had started months before was reformed, broadcasting it on another station for one hour daily. It became one of the most listened-to programs on RTVA Station, where live people were cured of illnesses and touched by simple messages about the power and love of Jesus.
Because of the crowd that constantly overcrowded the Cinema, the Church looked for a rental space, which it opened in 1992, on a street close to the Cinema. Just over 1,000 people participated in the inauguration of this space, which became known as the Sanctuary.
In 1993, complaints from neighbors regarding noise and the massive movement of people in a residential area led the authorities to limit activity in the space until complete soundproofing works were carried out. The Church realized that the cost was high and that the disturbance would not decrease, so it chose to move to a large space in the Vale da Venda area, outside the city, where it remained for 10 years.
It was in 2003, after a prophetic word from Morris Cerullo, in our Church, that we acquired the facilities that function as Headquarters, where we are currently, in Areal Gordo, Faro. We opened this space in November 2003 and since then we have carried out all of our main activities there.
During this period, the Church began other works and projects from different perspectives, always with a mission to bring Jesus and the principles of the Kingdom to people. It has been more than 50 years since a small seed was planted and the fruits speak for themselves. We can say, “The Lord has helped us so far!”
